Field Notes | Iris Liao

Welcome to my personal website! My name is Iris Liao - I'm an attorney based in the California Bay Area, interested in making sure AI doesn't kill everyone. I think the most viable strategy is pursuing international coordination via a treaty.

I'm a fellow with the Generator Residency out of Constellation, where I will be trying to create a project that brings together international lawyers/diplomats with technical AI researchers to collaborate on a treaty banning development of ASI. I'm also interested in other strategies to communicate X-risk; I'm working as a contractor with Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology assisting with legal research and drafting in critical AI litigation. I also do some childcare on the side!

Before trying to work full-time on international coordination on an AI treaty, I was a litigator at Hogan Lovells in San Francisco. There, I split my time with the Data Privacy and general litigation teams. My tasks ranged from drafting discovery, motions to dismiss, and handling administration of a mass arbitration with ~12,000 claimants.

I was also a summer fellow at the Institute for Law & AI, where I worked under Charlie Bullock and Gabe Weil to do research on state AI bill third-party auditing requirements, and potential moral hazards from a mandatory insurance regime.

I graduated from the University of Chicago Law School and Booth School of Business in 2025 with a JD and MBA. I graduated from Swarthmore College in 2022 with a honors major in Economics, honors minor in Asian Studies, and minor in Cognitive Science.
